Life's so good

“Life’s so good” is replacing “Stay a little longer” as Wisconsin’s state motto. Apparently no one has read Nate Loizeaux’s ‘blog. While I can appreciate the sentiment behind the change in motto, since I have a possibly unhealthy love of my home state, all I can think of, when hearing the new motto, is the crime and violence here. I think of Joe Clark, Bennie Frier, and Jeff Roy (all of whom I knew personally). I think of the Poynette teen who tried to kill his family with rat poison recently, the arson and murder trial currently going on four blocks from my house, the two teens who stabbed a man to death, the teen who beat a man to death because it was rumored the man had AIDS, and of course Jeffrey Dahmer and Ed Gien.

Life here is good, but only as good as being known for death can be.

Why I love Dawson’s Creek

It is not as silly as it first may seem … though it is still very silly. My love of Dawson’s Creek boils down to my love of romance and my own desire to rewrite my own history. When I speak of romance I don’t mean the romantic relationships portrayed on the show … I mean the relationships that were their real life predecessors. What I love about the silly teen soap opera is that, by admission, it is based in reality but a reality rewritten to include all of those things that one wishes one had said in the moment. I love the stupid show because it is an example of someone rewriting their own history the way they wish it was and making it tangible. Making real the should have, would have, could have parts of life is an incredible thought … I watch the show with that constantly in mind.
