I may be heartless but I still have my $20

"When presented with tales of woe and asked for relatively small sums that will help set things to rights, only the very rarest among us will as a matter of course turn down direct appeals for help. The vast majority will hear the unfortunates out, then make their decision to help or not based on the believability of the stories."

I remember the first time this scam was tried on me ... I was 13 and spending the summer at Nerd Camp on the Northwestern Campus ... my friends totally bought it and I called them dumbasses and threatened to call the cops, running off the con guy. Even at 13 I was unwilling to help the "needy."

Have a Holly Jolly Christmas

Christmas was good. It was very good ... with the MASSIVE exception of my sister it seems that my extended family may have actually given up on trying to turn me into a Connecticut W.A.S.P. That is right kids! There was nothing nautical under Amber’s Christmas Tree! No navy blue blazers with gold buttons, no boat shoes, NOTHING that is only appropriate on a large sail boat! Hurrah! Maybe they are beginning to have some concept of me and have given up hope that they can change it! One can dream…

Of course my parents rocked with one of the coolest gifts EVER … they replaced the copy of Creepy Susie and 13 Other Tales for Troubled Children that Tweedy destroyed with a signed copy that included an original drawing by the artist of … Tweedy chewing up the first book! YES! And it says “Bad Puppy” I was giddy … I also got a T-shirt with Carl from that iconic children’s story “Carl and the Crippled Black Kid with an Eye patch” and a Creepy Susie T-shirt! … Though I do still dream of having Milo’s shirt (from the Oblong’s) that simply says “NO.” I also got some Law & Order SVU DVDs (and I still intend to buy the first season which includes the episode based on the Hillsdale scandal … though I might wait since it was implied that I might be getting that for my birthday)

I gave my mother LOTR ROTK … and Megan Slankard’s first album my father got slippers and the Road Rage flip cards which he used with great glee when my mom and I weren’t fast enough opening presents … he would hold up signs such as “Speed it up already, Jackass!” My mother figures the cards might cause him to get shot on the beltway … but he is well insured ;)

Christmas night I was ready to settle in and rest my bloated, holiday treat filled belly and make a phone call when Edwards and Carrie walked in and ordered me to put on pants. It seems we were going out to the bar. Well, most of our usual bars were closed on Christmas night so we went to a tiny little townie bar called Poor Richard’s … better known as Poor Dick's … had a few beers, chatted and I went home early to make my call … feeling quite ill from the added belly distending factor of cheap beer … So that was Christmas.

Today the old people and I played video games and snacked … which reminds me … I am supposed to be looking up how to defeat Voldimort on the last level of HP and the SS ….
