Yo' Mama!

I am spoiling for a fight. I want a GOOD fight ... something satisfying. mmmm perhaps "fight" isn't the right word. I want a GOOD debate. One that makes me THINK and WORK. So, come on! Take me on! Anyone? Anyone? You pick the topic. My brain is bored and I am frustrated at work ... I need an outlet. PLEASE HELP!

Amber,

I have an intern at work. He and I were talking about job training and stuff, and I was showing him some mapping and I knew he had taken a class in GIS mapping and said, "If you already know the stuff I'm telling you, just let me know." And he said, "No, I didn't learn any of this... in fact, I don't think people should even go to college, everything you need to know can just be learned on the job."

As someone who had a classical liberal education, your response to this guy would be....?

Kat, I have only recently begun looking at that ...

Di,
In the specific case of GIS I would say that to a great degree he is right. In the area of GIS the educational system is light years behind the state of industry. If the intern just LOVES GIS and mapping and knows he will never do anything else in his life (including advance in the field of GIS and mapping) then yes, for him college is pretty useless and he would do better to just get on the job training. BUT since no one knows for sure exactly what they will be doing in 30 years post HS education is necessary if only to build a foundation for advancement and further education and training. Advancing in the GIS world requires a fairly advanced understanding of surveying and/or computer programing. Without one or both of these skills (skills that there would be little chance of him obtaining on the job) he would never be able to advance more than a few levels. I agree that not everyone needs a classical liberal education. There is a reason Tech schools exist, and in rapidly advancing fields on the job training is probably going to be much more usefull than what you learn in a classroom. Education makes employees better suited to quick adaptation in a constantly shifting work environment. So ummm there is a start as to what I would say to him.
